4 key points for selecting batteries for power tools

1:Which battery technology should I choose?

Three main technologies are commonly used in power tool batteries: Nickel-Metal Hybrid (NiMH), Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), and Lithium-ion (Li-ion).

Ni-cd batteries

Nickel-cadmium batteries represent the oldest generation of batteries on the market. These batteries are heavy and usually take a fairly long time to charge up. They also have a memory effect which means that if the battery is not sufficiently discharged before you attempt to recharge, the battery will fix a lower point of charge as its maximum level the next time it's plugged in. Over time, your battery will not be able to hold a full charge and won't be able to deliver as much power. Nickel-cadmium batteries are used to charge low-end power tools. However, these batteries have largely been replaced by lithium-ion batteries. It is recommended to allow Ni-cd batteries to discharge fully before recharging. You should also ensure that you don't leave them on the charger once they are fully charged. These batteries can withstand a high number of charge cycles.

Lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are, without a doubt, your best option! These batteries are lightweight, quick charging (an hour and a half on average), and do not have a memory effect. A Li-Ion battery will really give it all it's got until it eventually runs out of juice; in fact, this can be quite misleading if the battery doesn't have a battery indicator! Generally speaking, lithium batteries are found on most power tools as they offer the greatest user comfort.

Ni-Mh batteries

Nickel metal hydride batteries are fairly heavy (heavier than nickel-cadmium) but don't have much of a memory effect. This type of battery generally withstands a lower number of charge cycles than nickel-cadmium (about three times less). Ni-Mh batteries are not very common these days.

2:About the battery current (Ah)

The battery of electric tools is marked with "1.5Ah" and "3Ah".

This number refers to the value of current. With the increase of this number, the battery capacity will increase.

Therefore, the larger the current (Ah) value, the longer the battery can be used.

It is read as "ampere time (Ah)", indicating how much current can flow per hour.

By the way, if the amperage is large, it can not only be used for a long time, but also the charging time will be reduced. Therefore, there are more people who buy 6.0Ah and other large capacity batteries when they are used in construction related sites where the use time is easy to become longer.

3: About the difference of battery voltage

The battery of electric tools should be marked with "10.8V or 14.4V • 18V", which refers to the difference of voltage.

With the increase of voltage, the power becomes stronger, and high load operation can be carried out.

If you often use DIY with small workload, even if you choose cheap and easy to import 14.4V batteries, you can meet the needs of many customers.

However, in case of heavy load operation, 18V battery can improve the operation efficiency, so it is recommended.

4:About Capacity

We know that in the DIY process, we are more concerned about whether the electric tools can support us to complete the work smoothly, but also about whether they can help us to complete the work efficiently. At that time, we also care about the battery capacity of the tools.

For example, if we compare the replacement batteries of makita 40V2.5AH and makita 40V4.0Ah, the total capacity of BL4020 is 40 * 2.5=100 Wh, and the total capacity of BL4040 is 40 * 4=160 Wh. It can be seen that the battery capacity of makita 40V 4.0AH is larger, and the service life of makita bl4040 battery is longer under the same service environment and service time conditions of the two batteries.

Therefore, if customers want to save charging time and improve work efficiency, they are more recommended to purchase tools with large capacity to replace batteries.
